Your first dispensary visit
Kentucky's medical cannabis program is new. If you've never walked into a dispensary, this page is for you. Five minutes, plain language, no pressure.
What you need on you
- • Kentucky medical cannabis card
- • Government-issued photo ID
- • List of current medications (helps the budtender steer clear of interactions)
- • Cash or debit (most KY dispensaries don't accept credit yet)
- • 30+ minutes for your first visit
How a visit flows
- 1. Check in — front desk verifies your card and ID. You'll wait briefly in the lobby.
- 2. Sales floor — a budtender greets you. They're licensed consultants, not just cashiers.
- 3. Consult — tell them what you're treating, what you've tried, and how you want to feel. Be honest about experience level.
- 4. Browse — they'll narrow the menu to a handful of products that fit.
- 5. Pay & pack — exit-packaging is opaque and child-resistant by law.
3 questions every patient should ask
- "Can I see the COA?" — the Certificate of Analysis shows pesticide, metals, and microbial results. Reputable shops show it without hesitation.
- "What terpenes are in this?" — terpenes shape how a strain feels far more than the THC number alone.
- "Who grew it?" — Kentucky-grown means traceable. We link every product back to the cultivator.
THC isn't the whole story
A 28% THC flower isn't automatically "better" than an 18% one. Effects depend on terpenes, minor cannabinoids (CBG, CBN, THCV), how the plant was grown, and how you consume it. Ask for the full lab panel.
Every Kentucky-compliant label shows: batch ID · harvest date · cultivator · processor · THC% / CBD% · net weight · warnings. If a label is missing any of these, ask about it.
Under KRS 218B
You can shop at any licensed Kentucky dispensary regardless of which one issued your registration. Possession limits are a 10-day supply across products. You cannot consume on dispensary premises, in vehicles, or in public.
Your medical record stays with you. Dispensaries can see what you bought from them, but they do not share that data with insurers or employers.
